Al Burda Endowment

This bilingual (Arabic and English) publication features in-depth interviews with the 10 grantees – Aisha Khalid (Pakistan), Aljoud Lootah (UAE), Ammar Al Attar (UAE), Dana Awartani (Palestine), Ebtisam Abdulaziz (UAE), Khalid Al Banna (UAE), Nasser Al Salem (Saudi Arabia), Stanley Siu (Hong Kong), Fatima Uzdenova (Russia) and Zoulikha Bouabdellah (Algeria) – who comprise the first cohort of the Al Burda Endowment, an initiative by the UAE Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development to recognise artists who embrace experimentation and reinterpretation in their approach to Islamic art and culture. Also included are behind-the-scenes images of the making of the works that offer insight into the process of production alongside essays by Dr Venetia Porter, Assistant Keeper, Department of the Middle East, The British Museum and independent scholar Dr Ridha Moumni on contemporary Islamic art and its roots.
